Biography

Dr. Brittany Carpenter earned her B.S. in biology from Georgetown College and her Ph.D. in cellular and molecular biochemistry from University of Kentucky. Her graduate work focused on the association between integrin α6β4, DNA repair and DNA demethylation of EGFR ligands amphiregulin and epiregulin. She has received numerous awards and honors, including a T32 training grant from the National Institutes of Health. In 2016, she joined the laboratory of Dr. Peter Jones at Van Andel Research Institute as a postdoctoral fellow.

Current research focus

Previous work in the Jones Laboratory has demonstrated induction of endogenous retroviruses following treatment of cancer cells with DNA methyltransferase inhibitors such as 5-aza-CdR. This induction elicits an immune response in cancer cells leading to cell death. Dr. Carpenter’s project extends this work and focuses on the requirement for signaling through double-stranded RNA dependent protein kinase R (PKR) to elicit and immune response following upregulation of these viral elements.

She is also interested in a non-coding RNA, nc886, that is imprinted in disease-free individuals. This region of imprinting is altered in cancer and contributes to overall patient survival. Her studies of this region seek to understand both the mechanism for establishment of imprinting and the resulting phenotype following altered DNA methylation patterns and how this impacts human disease.
