Dr. Kumar earned his B.S. in agriculture from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, India and M.S. in life sciences from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. From 2011-17, he pursued his Ph.D. in molecular biophysics from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. His graduate work focused on studying the structure of DNA damage-inducing protein 1 from protozoans using x-ray crystallography and studying their interactions with inhibitors. Dr. Kumar also worked to understand the strain and pH-dependent structural changes in rotaviral enterotoxin NSP4. He characterized a Zn-bound single-chain camelid antibody raised against a secondary active transporter NorC from Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and determined the X-ray structure of the transporter in complex with the camelid antibody. In 2021, he joined Van Andel Institute as a postdoctoral fellow in the lab or Dr. Juan Du.
