Dr. Kotaro Anan earned an M.D. and a Ph.D. in philosophy in medical science from Kumamoto University. Dr. Anan’s work focuses on regulating metabolic diseases by manipulating the genome and how environmental factors affect the pathophysiology of metabolic diseases. His work led him to be a senior resident in pediatrics at Kumamoto University Hospital, before going on to do a clinical fellowship and a research fellowship. In 2019, he joined the laboratory of Dr. Andrew Pospisilik at Van Andel Research Institute as a postdoctoral fellow.
Individual phenotypes can vary even in isogenic animal models. I have an interest in how this polyphenism can influence the development of metabolic diseases. I investigate epigenetic mechanisms of polyphenism and how to prevent or modulate the course of the diseases.
